Bill used to be the number one gamer in 1989, and had a partnership with Sizzlers because of it, but as the years progressed, he struggled with life. He had his own gaming store business, but it didn't get many sales. Then he bought a storage unit because he was told it had an Atari Cosmos inside of it, but when he emptied the box, there was only junk inside. There was however, also the Orb of Dominance, and when Henry went into his store, he saw the orb and asked what it was, thus starting his adventure. Bill was best known for being a video game world champion in 1989, but has made no notable accomplishments since then, and as a result, he is stuck in the past and refuses to let go of his former glory, which makes him irresponsible, rude, condescending, arrogant, overconfident, and boastful. For instance, he tells Steve his Lava Chicken Jingle is bad, ignores Steve's advice to let the Lava Chicken cool down before eating, suffers a burning sensation, and tries to hide the pain. In another situation, he attempts to craft a better sword than Steve's, which backfires, leading him to invent buck-chuckets instead. He even falsely claims this was intentional after Steve remarked that they looked useful and Henry said they were cool like nun-chucks. Bill later attempts to wield this weapon against General Chungus but inadvertently knocks Steve unconscious with a single blow. When, before that, Steve offers to confront the general himself, Bill dismissively rebukes him, accusing Steve of always seizing the spotlight. Beneath his bravado, Bill is revealed to be a coward. This becomes apparent when he enters the Overworld, is blown up by a creeper, panics upon encountering hostile Mobs, and frantically flees and begs the team to let him back inside for safety. Over time, Bill's circumstances deteriorate further as he falls into severe financial hardship. Despite his attempts to recover, he never manages to rebuild his life, contributing to his selfish and self-centered behavior. This is exemplified when he tells Steve that he will only hand over the orb if Steve takes him to the diamonds—an expedition that endangers the lives of Bill, Steve, and Henry. After the dangerous minecart trip, Henry berates and calls Bill the most selfish person he's ever met. Bill tells Henry that he needs the diamonds for money because he's broke. He also tells Henry that his life is bad because he is struggling with his problems and is lonely without any friends, a statement that deeply wounds Henry, who had genuinely considered Bill a friend. Although Bill does form a friendship with Steve—particularly after being rescued from Chicken Jockey by him—his true redemption occurs when he allows Steve and Henry to escape while he remains behind to confront the Piglins. In doing so, Bill sacrifices his own safety, shedding his selfishness in a selfless act that results in an explosion which costs him his life as he is thrown from the bridge.
